Police have confirmed that a UPDF officer in Hoima District has shot himself dead.
Corporal Wilson Kalyango,40, a UPDF section commander in the 13th battalion, 303 brigade reportedly gunned himself down on Monday at around 5pm at Nyakasenene village, Kabaale Sub County in Hoima District.
According to the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, Mr. Julius Hakiza, the matter was reported at Kabaale Police Post and registered as CRR 018/2020. Police and military investigators immediately visited the scene for evidence gathering.
Mr Hakiza said a UPDF rifle containing 26 rounds of ammunition and two cartridges were recovered from the scene.     
“The safety catch was open to the last point. The body with bullet wounds in the neck and head was taken to Hoima city mortuary where a postmortem would be done,” he said.     
Mr Hakiza said Capt Okoboy, the battalion intelligence officer told police detectives that the Kalyango went missing on November 4, 2020, after a morning run exercise. 
He reportedly disappeared with 120 rounds of ammunition and the army launched a search for him until they got information that he had shot himself.  

In a related incident, an unidentified man was lynched on Monday on suspicion of stealing money from a women savings group at Kyamasuuka village, Bugambe Sub County in Kikuube District.
“An unidentified man was lynched to death by the mob. He was a suspected thief,” Mr Hakiza said. 
The suspect was accused of raiding the home of the treasurer of a women savings group and taking off with unspecified amounts of money.
Detectives visited the scene and the body was taken to Hoima regional referral hospital for postmortem and possible identification. Inquiries to establish the murder suspects are ongoing under file number CRB 499/2020, Mr Hakiza said.
